This class will be an intensive study of the purpose and form of Christian liturgy. We will explore the biblical foundations for liturgical worship, especially the “sacrificial” sequence and order of worship. The course will also address the cultural significance of liturgical Christian worship and the problems of modern “free” worship. Students will discover resources available in the Christian tradition for renewing Christian worship today. In addition to the instructor’s lectures students will read from a variety of historical, theological, and contemporary sources and make oral reports and lead discussions based on those readings. Depending on the composition of the class, there may also be opportunity for instruction on pastoral leadership and officiating in the liturgy as well.
The registration deadline is May 12, and no registrations will be accepted after that date. If a student cancels registration before the registration deadline, he will receive a full refund, or can roll over the payment to a future class. If he cancels after the deadline, he will receive a 75% refund or roll over his payment for a future class; if a student cancels after May 12, there will be no refund.
